In 1952, when PIRELLI developed the CINTURATO ™ tires, the mainstay radial tire size was 165R400 because when Michelin developed the radial tire, they made it to fit the millimetric rims they were using at the time on cars like the Citroen Traction Avant. (The Michelin 165SR400 X tires are still available with Michelin’s excellent build quality.)

Because of the improved grip of a radial tire, manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lancia and Alfa Romeo also started using millimetric rims to take advantage of the new radial tire technology. Then PIRELLI introduced its new progressive sports car radial tire, the 165HR400 CA67 CINTURATO ™ with its H Speed rating, which was the tire of choice for cars like the Lancia Aurelia, Alfa Romeo 2600 & Ferrari 250 Tour De France, and it wasn’t long before most of the major exotic car manufacturers were fitting PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ tires to all their cars.
